Stuffed Steamed Buns - Orient inspired

Updated: Oct 8

You'll require a steamer for this! This is a super versatile recipe where you can substitute ingredients to your taste. 🥣

Ingredients🥟:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup water

1 tsp salt

2 tsp sugar

1 sachet dried bread yeast (7g)

1 head of white cabbage

1 carrot

1/2 a leek

1 tbsp salt

Chillies (however much heat you like)

1/2 cup chopped parsley

1/2 cup chopped coriander

1 tbsp lime pickle

3 cloves of garlic

3 tbsp sweet chili sauce

2 tsp sesame oil

4 tsp cooking rice wine (found in Chinese grocery stores)

6 tsp dark soy sauce

1/2 lemon

1 tbsp olive oil

100ml of water

Process:

Combine all the ingredients thoroughly until a dough forms. To prepare the stuffing, finely chop the cabbage, carrot, and leek, then sprinkle the vegetables with salt. Allow them to marinate for 15 minutes. Spread the vegetables on a clean tablecloth, gather the edges, and squeeze out excess water. Next, divide the dough into 4 portions and shape them into balls. Use your thumbs to create a cup-like shape in the center of each dough ball (ensuring it is thick). Fill the dough cups generously with the vegetables, seal them by joining the edges, twisting slightly, and tucking them under the bun. Arrange the buns in a steamer (bamboo or any other type) and steam for 20 minutes. Let them rest for 5 minutes before uncovering. For the sauce, finely chop the chilies, parsley, coriander, lime pickle, and garlic. Place them in the sauce bowl and add sweet chili sauce, sesame oil, cooking rice wine, dark soy sauce, lemon juice, olive oil, and 100ml of water. Mix well, taste, and adjust seasoning as necessary.

Tips:

Oil a piece of foil and place it under the bun to prevent it from sticking to the steamer while cooking. Share your experience with me! Don't forget to use the #tgkchallenge 😚
